What's the Savannah cat mean ?

The Savannah is a hybrid feline resulting from the crossing between a domestic cat (Felis catus) and a Serval (Leptailurus serval, small wild feline of Africa), from where its belonging to the non-domestic species for the generations from F1 to F4. The first specimen was born on April 07, 1986 at the breeder Judee Frank in the United States. In 2001, the TICA accepted the registration of the Savannah breed. The specimens of generation F5 to F7 are accepted in exhibition at the LOOF since 2007.

The Savannah is created by man through a hybridization process which consists in the union of two different species: a Serval and a domestic cat. According to the generation and the purity of the Savannah kitten obtained, classification codes are attributed.

PHYSIC DESCRIPTION

Like its ancestor - the Serval - the Savannah has a wild look: it is tall and slender, has a long neck, large high and round ears, a short and thick tail. It is an elegant, powerful and long cat.

Size: Length of 80 to 100 cm and 40 to 45 cm at the withers for the F1 generation, less for the others.

Weight: 6 to 12 kg for the high generations, 4 to 6 kg for other generations. The males are always bigger and heavier than the females.

Coat: Pale yellow, yellow-brown, fawn, brown, black, grey marked with round black or brown spots. On the neck and shoulders, the spots merge into stripes. Its underside (chin, belly) is whitish. Their coat is called "spotted tabby".

Lifespan: 20 years on average.

FEATURES

The Savannah cat is an athletic, very active and adventurous cat who likes to jump, run and play, that's why he needs a lot of interaction with humans and a huge, suitable and secure living space to spend his boundless energy (enclosure). You must not leave him in total freedom: the Savannah is a runaway because of his unparalleled curiosity! Outdoor walks are not recommended because he is quite fearful.

He is very intelligent, creative, agile and fast, which leads him to constantly look for the next silly thing: climbing the curtains, opening doors and windows, jumping very high, opening the taps, chewing on plants, etc. Unlike most cats, the Savannah loves water to play and/or swim in. He loves hunting and fishing!

The Savannah is particularly affectionate, sweet, sociable and friendly with his human and with his fellow cats. It is a faithful little feline that bonds strongly with its human family. He is easy to live with and loves to be with his human for cuddles. He is however selective and will choose one or even two humans.

The savannah is a fascinating and exceptional feline with whom you will form a unique bond!

FOOD

The Savannah is a strict carnivore and being a Serval hybrid, it needs a meaty diet rich in taurine: whole chicks, raw poultry meat, raw fish, red meat occasionally. High protein and grain free cat food can be given as a complement.
